BLDC Motor IP Rating Guide: IP54, IP65, IP67 Explained for Industrial Buyers
An IP rating is two digits that determine whether your motor survives its operating environment or fails prematurely. Choose IP54 for a food processing line and your maintenance team will be replacing motors every 3 months. Spec IP67 for an indoor conveyor and you are paying 20% extra for protection you do not need. This guide explains how to read IP codes, which rating your application actually needs, how manufacturers achieve each protection level, and what a proper factory IP test looks like.
1. How to Read an IP Code
The IP (Ingress Protection) code per IEC 60529 uses two digits. The first digit (0–6) indicates solid particle protection. The second digit (0–9K) indicates liquid ingress protection. The code describes exactly what the motor housing can stop — and what it cannot.

Critical distinction: IP67 is not "IP66 plus immersion." A motor rated IP67 may or may not pass the IP66 water-jet test — the tests are different. If you need both dust-tight and water-jet resistance, specify IP66. If you need temporary submersion, specify IP67. If you need both, specify IP66/IP67 dual-rated.

3. Sealing Methods: How IP Ratings Are Achieved

4. Factory IP Testing: What to Ask Your Supplier
A motor that "meets IP65 design criteria" is not the same as a motor that has been IP65 tested. Ask your supplier:
- Do you test every motor, or batch-sample? — For IP54, batch testing (1 per 100) is acceptable. For IP67 on vehicle traction motors, 100% testing is industry standard.
- What is the test procedure? — IPX5 requires a 6.3mm nozzle at 12.5 L/min for 3+ minutes from 3m distance. IPX7 requires 30-minute submersion at 1m depth. The test report should specify nozzle size, flow rate, duration, and orientation.
- Do you test after thermal cycling? — Seals that pass IP testing at room temperature may leak after the motor heats up (seal expansion, grease thinning). A proper test runs the motor at rated load for 2 hours, then performs the IP test while the motor is still warm.
- Can I see the test rig? — During a factory audit, ask to walk the IP test station. If they cannot show it running, the rating exists only on the datasheet.
